Mystery Reader

On Friday, 2B was luckily enough to have another mystery reader. Based on the clues we had figured it out that it was Samay's mom. She came and read the story, The Snail at School. We really got into the story and asked A LOT of questions about the story after she was done reading to us. Thank you again for coming to read to our class!

Super Science

Today we had Mrs. Hickey come into the classroom and teach a Super Science Lesson. Super Science is a special program that allows parents to come into the classroom and teach a science lesson along with doing an experiment. The experiment went perfect with what we are learning about in science, THE WATER CYCLE. We learned about how water is filtered and brought into our home. We even got to make our own filtration center. It was a lot of fun and we can not wait for the next Super Science Lesson! Thank you Mrs. Hickey!

Field Trip

We are going on a Field Trip to Kline Creek Farm on October 20th. The permission slips were sent home on Tuesday. Please return as soon as possible. Each student needs to have a permission slip signed and returned in order to go on the field trip!

Book-It

The Book-it program is being offered to students in 2B. This program is optional but highly recommended to the readers in 2B. Students will be receiving a calendar for the month of October. Their goal is to read for 20 minutes each night and then color in the calendar. Since, the month of October is half way over students only need to complete the days that are left in October. Once, the calendar is completed, students should then bring it back to school and they will get a coupon for a free individual pan pizza from Pizza Hut. Each month they will receive a new calendar and for each month they can earn a free pan pizza! Happy Reading!

Mo Willems

During writing we have been brainstorming ideas to write about during Writer's Workshop. Today we viewed a video about Mo Willems the author of The Pigeon, Knuffle Bunny, and Elephant and Piggie Books. He shared with us how he gets ideas to write books and illustrations. Some of us might be writing our own Pigeon books in the upcoming weeks. Here is the website that was shown in class: http://pigeonpresents.com/

Mystery Reader

Last week we were lucky enough to have another mystery reader. Mrs. Hickey came into 2B to read to us, Rainbabies. We loved the story and most of us had never read it before. It is always nice to listen to a brand new book! Thank you Mrs. Hickey for taking time out of your day to come and be a mystery reader in 2B!!

Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives

This week we have been working on Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives in order to create Super Sentences. Ask your child to tell you what a noun is. How about a verb? And an adjective? We have been brainstorming all sorts of nouns, verbs, and adjectives - brainstorm some more at home! We especially liked the videos from TeacherTube.

The Happenings of 2B

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents for coming to Curriculum Night. It was a great opportunity for me to share with you what your children will be experiencing this year in Second Grade. I enjoyed meeting all of you and look forward to working closely with you this year in order to help your children be successful learners.

This week students worked very hard and learned a wealth of knowledge. During Daily 5, I was extremely impressed with the students as they worked towards building stamina for Read to Someone. Students achieved 15 minutes of stamina. We are currently up to 21 minutes for Read to Self and will continue to work next week on meeting our stamina goals. It was wonderful to observe students talking about what was happening in the books they were reading, checking for understanding and even laughing when arriving at a humorous part of the story. I was a very proud teacher! Next week will be learning a few other ways to Read to Someone and we will also be introducing Listen to Reading.

During our Literacy Block students have been engaged in a myriad of activities. Students learned about the following strategies: Monitor and Fix Up, Voracious Reading and Using Background Knowledge to Connect with Text (Text-to-Self Connections). These new tools for reading will continue to be a focus as students are reading independently throughout the year. Mrs. Ensign worked with students during our Literacy Block time this week so that I could take time to read with students and identify their levels. The assessment given will help me to identify the needs of each student. It will also give me a glimpse of whether students will need to focus on comprehension, accuracy, fluency or expanding vocabulary for their initial reading goals. Students continued to work with words and focus on specific patterns through the use of Words Their Way. This week the focus was on sorting their words and placing them in the correct categories. The students also independently wrote their word sorts in their words study notebook. Students are improving in this area and seem to be learning the routines very quickly.

The students participated in their first Explorations lesson and did an amazing job for their first time. Students got to practice some of the routines that they will need to know as we begin Guided Math. Students also began reviewing for the Unit 1 test by playing Jeopardy. Next week we will start Guided Math.

In Science, we have wrapped up our mini-unit on the Scientific Method. We learned the 7 steps of the Scientific Method: and even did some fun experiments! We did a paper towel experiment and learned that Bounty paper towels are not very absorbent and Clarissa paper towels are the most absorbent! We also experiemented with how to make our teachers spin. On Wednesday, we did an egg drop experiement, which resulted in an egg explotion!

In Writing, we have been brainstorming ideas for Writer’s Workshop. We went on an idea hunt around the school and outside to collect ideas. We are very excited to start writing next week!!!

Skate Night

On Tuesday, September 20, 2011 Gombert will be having Skate Night at the Aurora Skate Center. Skating will be from 6:30-8:30pm. The event is free to Gombert families but families are encouraged to bring gently used books to donate. Please make sure you accompany your child to the event or else they will not be able to skate.

IPICK Rap

We have been learning about the IPICK strategy in order to help students choose good-fit books. Students have been practicing the IPICK rap, and we finally had the chance to videotape it. Some of us are quite the performers. Look out Hollywood!!

Mystery Reader

2B had their first mystery reader! It was very exciting to hear all the five clues and to try and figure out who the mystery reader was this week. The mystery reader this week was..............Mrs. Rangel (Lorenzo's Mom). She read I Wanna Iguana to the class. Thank you again Mrs. Rangel for volunteering as the first mystery reader.

Curriculum Night

Dear Gombert Families,
I hope you will join us for Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 15, 2011. Traditionally, curriculum night is an opportunity for parents and guardians to meet their child's teacher and to attend a presentation on the curriculum to be covered during the year.We have three sessions in order to accommodate families with more than two children as well as visits to specials and support staff. There will also be early sessions for parents of students in our ELL and bilingual programs and the Project Arrow program. In some classrooms, the third session may follow a question and answer format instead of a typical presentation.Parents may proceed directly to classrooms upon arriving at school, as we will not have an introduction session in the gym.

The sessions will be 25 minutes in length with 5 minute "passing periods" following this schedule:
6:00-6:25 Early session for our ELL and bilingual programs and the Project Arrow program
6:20-6:30 Parents arrive and head straight to classrooms
6:30-6:55 Session I
7:00-7:25 Session II
7:30-7:55 Session III

While we respectfully ask parents to attend the evening without their children, we know that childcare is not always possible, and we would prefer you attend with children than not attend at all.We hope to see you at Curriculum Night!
Respectfully,

Jeremy Ricken

Extra Long Weekend

Due to the heat there will be NO SCHOOL tomorrow. Also, there is no school on Monday, September 5th and Tuesday, September 6th. Enjoy your extra long weekend and I will see everyone on Wednesday, September 7th!!!

Brain Breaks

Combined with the heat, a rigorous pace through Daily 5 and math lessons, and "the wiggles", 2B has been taking time each day for Brain Breaks. Brain Breaks are short, 1-2 minute activities that sometimes challenge the brain and sometimes just get a little energy out. Some days we sing, some we run in place, others we play counting games, or just do "The Wave."

Math Games

During math this past week, we have been playing a lot of math games. These math games help to promote the math skills that were taught that day. It is a fun and engaging way for the students to practice their math skills. Today the children were playing Penny Plate Math. It was a game that worked on adding and subtracting skills. The kids did a wonderful job playing the game the correct way!

Extended Weekend

Please be aware that there will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, September 5th in celebration of Labor Day. In addition, students will have NO SCHOOL on , Tuesday, September 6th as all certified staff members will be participating in meetings during Building Articulation Day. Students please enjoy your time off, and I will see you on Wednesday, September 7th.

Bully Prevention

Gombert and all schools in District 204 are implementing a Bully Prevention Program called Stop-Walk-Talk. The goal of Stop-Walk-Talk is to “give students the tools to reduce bullying behavior through the blending of school-wide positive behavior support, explicit instruction, and a redefinition of the bullying construct.”

This week in Second Grade, your child will be learning some valuable steps in confronting bullies they may encounter at school. When students observe another student not following one of the 4 Be’s of Gombert – Be Respectful, Be Resposible, Be Ready, and Be Safe – they will initiate the Stop-Walk-Talk method.

The method is simple and easy to execute. Students first let their bully know that they would like them to stop their behavior by giving a firm “Stop Sign” with their hand raised up in the air, palm out. If the bullying continues, the student is encouraged to walk away or remove themselves from the situation. The final step, Talk, is used only when the behavior continues beyond the stop and walk. If the student finds that Stop and Walk have not helped them to remove themselves from a bullying situation, they are encouraged to find the nearest adult, teacher, or supervisor to inform them of the situation.

IPICK Rap

On Thursday the kids learned the IPICK song. Students were introduced to the IPICK strategy on Monday, and we have been reviewing it daily. On Thursday students viewed a video of a second grade class performing the IPICK rap. Initially, there were a couple of students who were hesitant to join in; however, I told them if I could do it, they definitely could do it too. They were so excited to perform the rap and learn the movements. We will continue to review this very important strategy in order to help students choose good-fit books throughout the year. Once, we have it down I will video tape them and uploaded to the blog.....look for that this upcoming week!

Team Names

The kiddos in 2B are sitting in groups. Their desks have about five or six people in their teams. Instead of Mrs. Bretz giving them their team names, they got to work together and come up with their own team name. They had about twenty minutes to choose a team name and decorate a poster to put above their group of desks.......................check it out!

Movie Night

On Friday, August 26th at 7:30 the Gombert PTA is sponsoring a Movie Night. They are going to be showing "The Incredibles" and will be providing popcorn. You will need to bring your own drinks, chairs, and bug spray!

Gator Folder

Everyone received a Gator Folder today. The students are to bring this home every night and bring it back to school EVERYDAY! This folder will hold any important notes, school work, and homework. It is important to keep it in a safe spot at home, so the kids can have it for school. Make sure you look through the folder tonight. There are a lot of important papers in them!

First Day of School

The first day of school went wonderful! We were very busy sorting our supplies in the morning and coming up with 2B's rules! In the afternoon we went to music and LMC. Mrs. Smith let us check out two books from the library. We also played a math game, MINGO, and went over expectations for the hallway! Please remember to bring a water bottle and dress light because it gets really warm in the classroom. I am excited and impressed with this group of second graders! I look forward to a fun-filled school year!!!!
