Aaron Reynolds Visits

Thanks to the PTA we got to listen to a very inspiring Aaron Reynolds. He is a children's author of many favorite children's books. He was very entertaining and he taught us a lot about how and why he became an author. During one part of his presentation, he picked students to come help him out on stage. Tationna was chosen from our class and she did a FANTASTIC job! If you are interested in learning more about him you can visit his blog at http://www.aaron-reynolds.com/.

Animal Research

We have finally started animal research. The students picked out an animal that they knew little about, to do research on. We have been using books and online databases to collect all of our information. Everyone is doing a great job and having a lot of fun with it as well.  Here are some photos from the computer lab today!

Community Projects

Second Grade will be busy learning about urban, suburban, and rural areas in social studies.  We will be designing a mini-replica of the suburban community in which we live.  As a class, we have brainstormed many places that we live, work, play and shop.

Each child has been assigned a place in the community to design.  Using the paper provided and other materials at home, your child needs to design their building.  Please help your child be as creative and realistic as he/she can!  Keep in mind that the projects will be mounted on the walls in our second grade hallway.

Along with creating a building in your community, your child will need to write a paragraph to be presented in class describing the purpose of the building.  Be sure he/she includes a main idea, at least three details and a conclusion.  The paragraph should be indented and neatly written on the template provided.  It may also be written on a notecard for presentation purposes, but is not necessary.

The finished projects and paragraphs are dueFriday, May 3, 2013.  We are very excited to build our own community!  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at school.  Thank you for your help and cooperation!

Spring Party

The Spring party was an excellent time! The kids played a game and made a craft. The game was definitely a hit. I hope everyone enjoys their Spring Break!!!

Sink and Float Boats

For our Spring Party, we will be celebrating our Sink and Float science unit. We are asking each student to build a boat at home for a cargo contest. We are encouraging each student to design and construct a boat that has the greatest capacity. Boats will be loaded with ceramic tiles or plastic cubes until they sink, so strength is also a consideration. The boat can be made from any available materials you have at home. Some suggested materials are waxed paper, cardboard, foam trays, foil, Popsicle sticks, etc. (No store bought boats will be allowed in the contest.) boats larger than the required size will be disqualified. Completed boats are due back at school on April 17, 2013. Our contest will be on Thursday, April 18th. We want to emphasize that the activity is designed to be a fun learning experience rather than a highly competitive event. Please consult the letter in your student's backpack mail regarding the size restrictions for the boat.

Working Together

In Math, we have been practicing Math word problems. We have been asked to draw, write, and solve the problems. Working together with a partner has helped us talk about our strategies and answers. We will continue to do this throughout the rest of the school year!

Math Acceleration Test

Next Tuesday, April 19, all Second Grade students will be taking the Math Acceleration test during their normal math block. The best preparation for this exam is a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast.
