Aaron Reynolds Visits

Thanks to the PTA we got to listen to a very inspiring Aaron Reynolds. He is a children's author of many favorite children's books. He was very entertaining and he taught us a lot about how and why he became an author. During one part of his presentation, he picked students to come help him out on stage. Tationna was chosen from our class and she did a FANTASTIC job! If you are interested in learning more about him you can visit his blog at http://www.aaron-reynolds.com/.

Animal Research

We have finally started animal research. The students picked out an animal that they knew little about, to do research on. We have been using books and online databases to collect all of our information. Everyone is doing a great job and having a lot of fun with it as well.  Here are some photos from the computer lab today!

Sink and Float Party

We ended our Sink and Float unit with a party. We had root beer floats, made an oil and water experiment, and sank our boats. It was a great way to end the unit. We all had A LOT of fun on Thursday. A BIG thank you to all the volunteers that helped out.

Community Projects

Second Grade will be busy learning about urban, suburban, and rural areas in social studies.  We will be designing a mini-replica of the suburban community in which we live.  As a class, we have brainstormed many places that we live, work, play and shop.

Each child has been assigned a place in the community to design.  Using the paper provided and other materials at home, your child needs to design their building.  Please help your child be as creative and realistic as he/she can!  Keep in mind that the projects will be mounted on the walls in our second grade hallway.

Along with creating a building in your community, your child will need to write a paragraph to be presented in class describing the purpose of the building.  Be sure he/she includes a main idea, at least three details and a conclusion.  The paragraph should be indented and neatly written on the template provided.  It may also be written on a notecard for presentation purposes, but is not necessary.

The finished projects and paragraphs are dueFriday, May 3, 2013.  We are very excited to build our own community!  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at school.  Thank you for your help and cooperation!
