Open House

The students have been working very hard on a lot of projects to prepare for Open House. We are hoping that everyone can stop on by on February 5th from 6:30-8:00. It will be a fun night for your student to show you around their classroom and the school. I am looking forward to seeing everyone and their families!

Mystery Reader

We were lucky enough to have another mystery reader this year. Taylor and Cassidy's grandmother, who was visiting from California came to read to our class and 2F. She read, Pickle and Penguin which was a  funny story about two characters that you would never expect to be friends. We hope that she left the warm weather behind with all of us! Thank you again for coming in to be a mystery reader!

Long Sleeve Shirt

Just a reminder that we are asking each second grade student to send a long-sleeve t-shirt to school. We will be using the shirts for Open House and will return them immediately following!   Please send the tees to school by Friday, February 1.  If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call.

100th Day

Second Grade will be celebrating the 100th Day of School on Tuesday, February 5th! In order to celebrate, we read the story 100 Hungry Ants and discussed all of the possible arrays that could be used to represent 100. We have challenged the second graders to create their own arrays to display 100 objects. The objects could be stickers, cereal, cotton balls, etc. The students have been learning about using arrays to represent multiplication of equal groups, so their objects should be arranged in an array. We would like the students to return their 100 Arrays by February 4th, so that we can display them at Open House! Happy Counting!

Bingo Night

Family Bingo Night will be held on Friday, February 1 in the multi-purpose room. Doors open at 6:15 pm; games begin at 6:30 pm. Bingo cards are $1 to play. Bring the whole family for a fun night and a chance to win!

The Greedy Triangle

To begin our time back at school after break, 2B began investigating 2D Shapes.  We began with a lesson called the Greedy Triangle, which is a story about a triangle who becomes unhappy with being a triangle and keeps adding sides and angles to her body.  The students were able to manipulate shapes using geoboards and create 2D shapes.  We spent the past week working on Reader's Theater plays based on the book.  We did such a good job, and we always love the chance to put on a play!  Here are a few pictures of our performances!

Report Card Envelopes

Please sign and date your student's report card envelope and send back ASAP!
Thank You

I believe statements

In writing this past week, we have been focusing on opinion writing. We listened to a radio interview with a kindergartner named Tarack, who wrote 100 I believe statements. They were all his own opinions on different items that he believes in. I challenged that students to write their own I believe statements and to see if they can reach 100 before the 100th day of school, which is on Feb. 5th. We had a great start and we did some sharing with partners. I am very impressed with their I believe statements!

BYOT

Our greatly anticipated program, Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) begins on Tuesday! Students may begin bringing devices to school with them each day. Students are not guaranteed to use the devices each day and should make sure that their devices are fully charged, as there will be no way to charge them at school. Please also ensure that your student's device is labeled and has Wi-Fi capabilities.

Since we are just beginning, we will be experimenting with how the devices will best suit our classroom and instructional needs. We are excited for this awesome opportunity!

Cookie Dough Fundraiser

Yesterday kicked off our Cookie Dough Fundraiser at Gombert! We are fundraising in the hope that we can use the money to purchase more SmartBoards for the building. Students were encouraged to meet a goal to sell 6 containers of cookie dough each. If each student at Gombert was able to sell that much, we would be able to meet our fundraising goal of $4000! Today, your child received their fundraising packet in their backpack mail.

Students have the opportunity to earn individual prizes, class prizes, and school-wide prizes! If the entire school meets the goal of $4000, we will have a PJ day at school. Check out the flyer in the packet to see the individual prizes for students.

For every 15 containers of cookie dough sold, families will get to choose one tub of cookie dough for free!

FORE! Family Fun

Please come out on January 16th at 6:15 to have a fun filled evening with my family and I at Fore. We will be playing mini golf and eating pizza. It will be a great evening outside of school to be able to be together with our families. Your child received a letter and reservation card for the event. If you could please turn that back into school ASAP that would be wonderful. I hope you all can make it out for this event!!!

Slice of Life and BYOT forms

Just a reminder....
I have received many pictures via email for Slice of Life. I appreciate all parents for getting those pictures to me. I still need a handful of students photo's. Please send them via email or with your child to school. Thank you!

I need EVERYONE to return the BYOT form, even if your child is not bringing in their own technology. I have about half of the class right now. Make sure you check your student's Gator folder for the form if you have not signed it.

Reader's Theatre

The last two days before winter break we took a break from Daily 5 and practiced different reader's theaters.  The kids had a great time reading and getting into their roles. We performed the plays for 2S. Reader's theater is an exciting and unique way to not only practice reading, but reading with expression!

Mystery Reader

The day before winter break we had a mystery reader. We were very excited that Mr. Baugh was are mystery reader. Taylor and Cassidy were thrilled as well. We listened to him read poems from, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It was a great way to start Winter Break!! Thank you again Mr. Baugh for coming in and sharing the silly poems with 2B and 2F.
