Super Science
Mr. Hess came on Friday to do a Super Science experiment with the students of 2B! The experiment was an opportunity for the students to use and extend their knowledge about the water cycle! Mr. Hess brought some really dirty water with her to school and we used a flower pot, coffee filter, rocks, and sand to clean the water. It wasn't perfectly clean and ready for drinking, but we certainly made a difference using just those resources! Thanks for coming, Mr. Hess!

Mix It Up Day
On Tuesday, October 30, students at Gombert will be participating in Mix It Up Day. We will join over 2 million students across the country to demonstrate the importance of repecting and valuing each other's differences. Mix It Up is a great event for students with very positive outcomes. It is very simple. We just ask students to "Mix It Up" for one day at lunch to meet someone new and to have a conversation.
If you would be able to volunteer on this day, please contact Mrs. Molina about visiting during the Second Grade lunch period (11:25-11:45) on Tuesday to help out!

Pennies for Pies
In conjunction with Market Day Dessert Bonus Days this year, we will also be raising money to purchase pies for a local charity. Nouns
The students have been learning all about nouns. We have discussed how a noun is a person, place or thing. We have also learned the difference between a common and a proper noun. Today students were involved in stations which helped them to solidify their knowledge about nouns. Tomorrow and Thursday they will also discover how to change singular nouns into plural nouns simply by changing their word endings. Here are some of the stations in action!!
Field Trip
The field trip will take place on Thursday, October 25, 2012 from 9:30am - 1:30pm.

October 17th
On October 17th, the students have a half day of school. The dismissal time for the students is 12:15. We will not have lunch, but students may bring a snack. They will have time to eat a snack in the morning on October 17th.
The Writing Process
After spending a few weeks working on where we get ideas for our writing from, we were finally ready to learn about the steps in the writing process! We began by working with Play Dough to create a secret food object that no one could know but ourselves. Then we had people critique our sculptures and even modified them to reflect the recommended changes from our partners. In the end, we shared our food items and celebrated the finished products! We compared all of these steps that we took with the Play Dough to the important steps we take to modify, edit, change, and publish our writing. We are looking forward to beginning to publish our very own writing pieces!

The Writing Process
In writing, we are learning that editing is a very important part of the writing process. We had a chance to edit our own writing from the beginning of the year. Editing will help our writing piece become even better. We will be doing a hands-on activity on Tuesday that involves play-dough and the writing process!

Water droplets are in flight.....
In Science this week, we made our water cycle wheels. As we were working we listened to our favorite water cycle song! We have been learning about the vocabulary words; precipitation, evaporation, condensation, and accumulation. Ask your second grader at home what these key words mean, and how they play an important role in the water cycle.
Listen To Reading
Students have been practicing Listen to Reading. This is an opportunity for students to read digital stories through the use of some wonderful online sites. Please click here to access some of the sites that students will be using at school during Daily 5. In order to access stories on Tumble Books, they will need a username and password.

Pizza Hut Book It
In your student's backpack mail today, you will receive a letter introducing you to the Pizza Hut Book It! Program. This program seeks to encourage continued reading throughout the school year. Students who read at least 20 minutes per day in one month (for Second Grade) can return their colored calendar each month for a new coupon for a free personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut. Simply color each day on the calendar that your child reads for at least 20 minutes!
Visit http://www.bookitprogram.com/ for more information and resources about the program. Keep reading and encouraging your child to read! Return the calendar at the end of each month for your child's free pizza! This year Book It has partnered with Diary of a Wimpy kid, so you can access all kinds of Diary of a Wimpy Kid stuff on the website as well!
